From August 31 to September 12, 2023, my friend Diana and I embarked on an unforgettable journey through Italy. Our mission was twofold: to explore the breathtaking beauty of this Mediterranean gem and to seek God's guidance on Diana's 15+-year vision to purchase property for a noble cause.

Diana felt a divine calling to establish a haven of rest and relaxation for missionaries serving in countries around the globe. This retreat would offer a sanctuary for those dedicating their lives to bringing the Kingdom of God to earth through spreading the gospel message of Jesus Christ.

Our Italian Adventure Begins

Our journey began with a smooth flight from Newark to Naples on August 31st. We were blessed with an uneventful passage through TSA, and thanks to Bob and Sheila who provided transportation. This thoughtful gesture not only eased our minds but also saved us the hassle and cost of parking our vehicle for 13 days. It was a blessing to begin our trip on such a positive note.

At Newark airport, we had a delightful lunch where we met two lovely ladies who were also embarking on their own European adventure. They were heading to Austria, with one of them enthusiastically planning to recreate the iconic scene from "The Sound of Music." Their joy was infectious and set a wonderful tone for our own journey.

Our flight from Newark to Naples weathered some turbulence, but our faith kept us calm. Diana's spiritual connection was evident from the start — she shared a vision of the Naples airport with a 5-foot marquee reading "Welcome Diana."

Upon landing in Naples, an airport official locked eyes with us and led us away from a 50-60 person immigration line, breezing us through customs. With grateful hearts, we stepped out into the warm Italian sun, where our driver Eduardo whisked us away to our first destination: Ravello.

Ravello: A Slice of Heaven

Perched high above the Amalfi Coast, Ravello welcomed us with open arms. Our accommodation at Hotel Rufolo was nothing short of magical. The nightly ritual of turndown service with chocolate on our pillows added an extra touch of luxury.

One of our finest dining experiences was at Ristorante Rufolo, where the breathtaking cliffside views combined with an impeccably prepared menu were nothing short of magical. Each dish arrived like a masterpiece, earning a well-deserved chef's kiss.

A highlight was Chef Vincenzo's cooking class at Villa Maria, where we donned aprons, learned the secrets of Italian cuisine, and met a local cheese factory owner who taught us the art of making mozzarella balls.

We visited the Villa Cimbrone Infinity Garden twice — views that seemed to stretch into eternity. In a moment of spiritual guidance, Diana asked God for a sign regarding the purchase of artwork depicting Villa Cimbrone, requesting He clear everyone from the overlook. To our amazement, He did just that.

Capri and Anacapri: Island Paradise

September 4th, we set sail for the island of Capri. Despite high winds altering our ferry plans, we made it to Orsa Maggiore in Anacapri, where we were warmly greeted by friendly porters Luigi and Nicolas.

Our walking tour was led by Melania, a native of Capri. We savored exquisite meals at Da'Gelsomina, where panoramic views rivaled the delicious food — local white wine became our drink of choice, perfectly complementing dishes like the unforgettable Ravioli Caprese.

A personal highlight was fulfilling a lifelong dream — purchasing authentic Italian shoes at Shoemaker Capri Chica. The shoes were handmade just for me, stamped with my initials, and designed to last 100 years.

Both Diana and I separately felt a strong, almost tangible connection to Anacapri. The deep personal touches we experienced at Orsa Maggiore felt like glimpses into what care for weary missionaries could look like.

Positano: Chic Coastal Charm

Positano's beauty extended far beyond its famous beaches, inviting us to explore its vertical landscape and hidden gems. We were awed by the historical treasures, including an eighth-century depiction of the nativity and a 1st-century church.

On September 9th we climbed what felt like 1000 steps to reach a kitchenware store called Vincenzo. The climb was challenging (as evidenced by my tears of exertion). Diana, on the other hand, moved up those stairs like she'd been doing it her whole life.

That same morning, news reached us that Diana's beloved cousin Mike had found his final peace. Though Diana had departed for Italy knowing this moment might come, the weight of loss still caught her between the beauty of earth and heaven.

When the coastal road to Amalfi was closed due to fires and landslides, we took the disruption as a providential nudge — three different people had already suggested a day trip to Sorrento.

Sorrento: An Unexpected Detour

On September 10th, we embarked on our trip to Sorrento. The bus ride itself was an adventure — we met a couple from Australia on a six-week holiday and another couple from Illinois.

We wandered through a maze-like market area, paused at charming stalls to purchase handcrafted souvenirs, and settled into a local eatery to savor authentic Italian specialties. A lighthearted moment occurred when a brown butterfly gently slapped me in the face — a small yet symbolic gesture from nature.

Back in Positano on September 11th, a beach encounter with Charlie from Scotland and Ricardo from South Africa took on greater significance when we learned Ricardo was a chef. Could he be a potential personal chef for Diana's future ministry? Another piece of the puzzle.

Southern Italy Musts

No day in our Italian adventure was complete without a scoop (or two) of gelato — coconut, pistachio, pineapple, tiramisu, strawberry, and rum raisin became our daily indulgence.

While traditional Limoncello didn't win us over, the creamy version stole our hearts. Each sip was a velvety reminder of the zest and warmth of Southern Italy.

Italians carve out ample time to sit, savor, and enjoy their food. Long, relaxed dinners can stretch for hours, and no tipping is expected — a service charge known as "coperto" is often included.

Farewell to Italy

September 12th — As we left Positano, we took a moment to encourage the young receptionist at our hotel to pursue his dream of becoming a sports journalist. Cameron, our outstanding lead travel guide from Scenarious Travel, orchestrated a touching farewell gesture: a celebratory champagne set with real glass flutes.

Upon arriving in Naples, we were warmly greeted by Marica at Domvs Deorvm — a luxurious B&B that felt like an oasis of comfort and sophistication.

Our 9½-hour flight from Naples to Newark was surprisingly smooth. God's favor was evident throughout, including a special meal on the flight back. Just before landing, we were offered sandwiches — another unexpected favor that wasn't extended to other passengers.

Reflections on Our Journey

Our Italian adventure was more than just a vacation; it was a spiritual pilgrimage. We witnessed God's hand in every aspect of our trip, from safe travels to divine appointments.

While the exact location for Diana's missionary retreat remains uncertain, we trust that God will reveal His plan in His perfect timing. This journey reminded us that sometimes the greatest discoveries are made in the quiet moments of reflection, prayer, and fellowship.

Every step, every divine appointment, and every answered prayer has woven together to create something beautiful.
